Florence Foster Jenkins (2016)

24th March 2018

Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant are perfectly cast in this film, set in the opulence of the upper echelons of New York society in the 1940s. A story based on truth. Madam Florence's reputation as an operatic singer is skilfully protected, primarily by her husband, due to her philanthropic generosity to the music fraternity of the city. The truth is undeniably revealed, however, through her recording and in her final concert. There were no short films to delight us this time as Eugene Gardner was on a well earned break. The discussion group agreed it is a beautifully produced film; humorous and well performed. Madam Florence had to be admired for her tenacity in the face of her debilitating illness as well as for her belief in her own talent. Sonia
