A Personal History of David Copperfield drew strong views from our well attended discussion group. We had no issues at all with the integrated casting - that was a positive and refreshing aspect. We enjoyed hearing about a discussion group member's experience in diverse Montreal
We all particularly valued Hugh Laurie and Ben Whishaw's performances which were nuanced and in the spirit of Dickens. It was the style that divided opinions - it was fast paced and action packed, with not so many reflective scenes. The bright colours didn't fit our impression of Victorian London. One direction member had loved director Armando Iannucci's Death of Stalin but was more critical of this film.
We were delighted to hear from a volunteer who, like our discussion leader, really loved the movie. It just showed how personal film can be. Our short films were also discussed, with one member of the group very keen on the powerful animation by an Afghani refugee about his experience in Britain.
