For the first film evening of our second year we were first entertained with a couple of short films around the theme of migration. The first was a documentary of 'The Jungle Restaurant' which showed us the life of asylum seekers congregated in the encampment in the vicinity of Calais, France. Our second short covered the journey of Shmilu, a Hasidic Jew in crisis, torn between his community and the romantic possibilities of trendy East London. After the customary intermission where the bar serviced most of the 59 people in the audience we sat down to a splendid film. The film sparked a lively debate at the discussion group which was larger and longer than usual.
