Song Sung Blue (2025)

What’s not to like about this poignant and uplifting film? It’s based on a 2009 documentary about a Milwaukee married couple who form a Neil Diamond tribute band. Knowing that Mike and Claire Sardina – Lightning and Thunder - were real life entertainers makes it even more touching. Mike sadly passed away in 2006, Claire continues to perform.

Song Sung Blue (2025) written and directed by Craig Brewer, could easily be a ‘made for television’ underwhelming experience. The elements are there – how many times have we seen the trope of bikers (or cowboys) fighting as singers bravely carry on, ignored?  Somehow the film rises above the clichés. You experience Mike and Claire’s serious life challenges and are thrilled by their successes.

There are themes of physical vulnerability and disability, alcohol dependency, mental health issues and of course, the way in which music and the arts can engage, heal and inspire. We also meet some nice people along the way, which is unusual for today’s movies. Even the children from Mike and Claire’s previous relationships, after initial tensions, end up gelling together perfectly.

Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson relish the main roles and can’t be faulted. Hugh, you’re forgiven for The Greatest Showman (I know most people love that film).  Kate is great in blingy costumes. Sequins – yes, please.

Song Sung Blue is heartwarming and optimistic. It’s “So good, so good!”  It’s a Diamond, in fact.
