One Battle After Another (2025)
Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterwork, One Battle After Another (2025), is a sweeping, pulse-pounding cinematic event that fuses high-stakes action with deeply human drama. Loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland, the film showcases visionary storytelling on an epic canvas, pairing adrenaline-fuelled sequences with a rich, satirical core.
The narrative centers on Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a washed-up former radical explosive expert from the underground collective known as French 75. Having long traded his revolutionary past for a quiet, haze-filled life of domesticity, Bob’s sole focus is raising his sharp-witted daughter, Willa (Chase Infiniti). However, their quiet existence shatters when Colonel Steven J. Lockjaw (Sean Penn)—a ruthless, corrupt military officer harboring an obsessive grudge—resurfaces after sixteen years to settle old scores and erase his own past sins.
When Willa suddenly goes missing amidst the escalating hunt, Bob is thrust back into a world he thought he had left behind. Desperate to track down his daughter, Bob must navigate a chaotic landscape of old comrades, eccentric allies, and shadowy forces. His journey crosses paths with Sensei Sergio St. Carlos (Benicio del Toro), a calm community leader who provides refuge in the storm, and Deandra (Regina Hall), a former ally navigating the fray. As father and daughter navigate their respective trials, both must confront the heavy weight of legacy, memory, and survival.
Visually stunning and relentlessly paced, the film balances breathtaking desert car chases and kinetic set pieces with an emotionally resonant father-daughter story. DiCaprio delivers a standout, wildly engaging performance that anchors the film, while Penn’s menacing turn and del Toro’s steadying presence elevate every scene. Teyana Taylor and newcomer Chase Infiniti shine brilliantly, offering fierce, unforgettable performances.
Complemented by a hypnotic, atmospheric score from Jonny Greenwood, One Battle After Another is a monumental big-screen experience. It demands to be seen in the immersive environment of a cinema, offering our audience an unmissable afternoon of top-tier filmmaking, thrilling suspense, and rich narrative depth.
