NT Live: Golden Boy

Set against the gritty backdrop of 1930s New York during the height of  the Depression, Clifford Odets’ American classic Golden Boy arrives in a  blistering new revival directed by Olivier Award winner Sam Yates.  Filmed live from the stage of the Almeida Theatre for National Theatre  Live, this major production offers a searing examination of ambition,  identity, and the heavy moral toll exacted by the pursuit of success.

The  narrative centres on Joe Bonaparte, portrayed with magnetic intensity  by Emmy and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor. Joe is a young man  blessed with rare artistic sensitivity—a gifted violinist with a  promising future in classical music. However, driven by a fierce  internal hunger to prove his worth and protect his immigrant family from  financial precarity, he makes a fateful pivot. Lured by the  intoxicating promise of quick fame and fortune, Joe steps away from his  violin and enters the brutal, high-stakes world of professional boxing.

As  he climbs the ranks under the watchful eye of hard-nosed promoters, Joe  discovers that the price of physical dominance is the erosion of his  soul. His delicate hands, once meant for creating delicate melodies, are  transformed into lethal weapons. Caught between the seductive,  cut-throat myth of the American Dream and the quiet, grounding honour of  a decent life, Joe becomes a tragic figure torn in two.

Yates’  propulsive staging heightens the tense atmosphere of Odets' text,  brilliantly underscored by the addition of a live on-stage string  quartet that echoes Joe's internal musical conflict. O’Connor leads an  exceptional ensemble cast that captures both the raw brutality of the  boxing ring and the tender, fractured dynamics of a working-class family  under pressure.

This cinematic capture fuses the intimacy of a live string quartet close-up performance with the electrifying energy of a packed London Almeida theatre. It is a powerful, heart-wrenching meditation on what a person  is willing to sacrifice for greatness.

The programme starts 30 minutes after doors open and on Saturdays the main feature about 60 minutes after doors open.
