Verdi: La Traviata
The courtesan Violetta lives and breathes the glamour of Parisian high society, but she has never known love – until she meets Alfredo. Abandoning her hedonistic existence for a new life in the country, Violetta receives a surprise visit from Alfredo’s father, who exposes the cruelty of society’s double standards – and accelerates her tragic demise.
Act I
The opera opens with a lavish party at Violetta’s salon. Alfredo, who has admired Violetta from afar, is introduced to her by a mutual friend. Despite her initial reluctance, Violetta is moved by Alfredo’s genuine affection. As the party ends, Alfredo confesses his love, and Violetta, though hesitant, begins to consider the possibility of true love.
Act II
Violetta and Alfredo are now living together in the countryside, enjoying a blissful life away from Paris. However, their happiness is short-lived. Alfredo learns that Violetta has been selling her possessions to support their lifestyle. He returns to Paris to settle their finances. During his absence, Alfredo’s father, Giorgio Germont, visits Violetta and pleads with her to end the relationship for the sake of his family’s honour. Heartbroken, Violetta agrees and leaves a farewell note for Alfredo.
Act III
Violetta returns to her former life in Paris. Alfredo, unaware of his father’s intervention, is devastated by Violetta’s departure. He confronts her at a party, publicly denouncing her. Later, Giorgio reveals the truth to Alfredo, who rushes to Violetta’s side. By the time he arrives, Violetta is gravely ill. In a poignant final scene, they reconcile, but Violetta succumbs to her illness, dying in Alfredo’s arms.
